Barentsburg, Svalbard Archipelago, 2001 | Barentsburg is the main Russian community on Spitsbergen. It is now open to tourists, and boat excursions from Longyearbyen to Barentsburg are available more or less daily in the summer. Around 1,000 Russians and Ukranians work in the mines, but are not allowed to travel to the Norwegian settlement of Longyearbyen. This photograph is taken inside the only "restaurant" in the town, where Norwegian currency is the norm. June 2001.
