Calcutta, India, 1976 | From my diary December 10, 1976: Calcutta, India–200,000 people live on the streets in the Bengal capital of Calcutta, and every fourth person live in slum dwellings. The city cannot provide enough homes or work for people increasingly arriving from the surrounding country side. People have to resort to doing all sorts of business on the streets. An attempt from city authorities to introduce cycle rickshaws were met by fervent protests from rickshaw pullers. Major reason: they do not know how to bicycle and are afraid of loosing their work.
