Ghandruk, Nepal, 1979 | This photograph was taken in the early morning in mid May at the village of Ghandruk, on the way to the Annapurna Base Camp. A Gurung village, today it holds the The Annapurna Conservation Area Project headquarters, but back in 1979 my Nepali friend and I rented a room for 5 rupees (then about 50 US cents), including evening meal and breakfast for two. From Ghandruk you can have dramatic views of the peaks of (from left to right) Annapurna South (7,219 meters), Huinchuli (6,441 meters), and Machhapuchhare (6,993 meters) |
